How Coaching Works

Coaching can mean so many different things to different people, so your experience will be unique to you. Some people take on a coach to help them through a specific situation or phase of life, whilst others just feel stuck and want to get their mojo back.

Nevertheless, coaching is a powerful tool, and the process is fairly similar for most people.

Step 1 - Choosing your coach

Once you've found a coach, you'll need to ensure that they are suitable for you. Some key things to check are their specialism (or niche' as many people call it), their availability, costs, and personality. Most coaches will provide a free initial consultation, which enables both you and them to establish if it's a good fit.

I specialise in helping franchise professionals and business owners to overcome challenges and grow their businesses. You can book your free consultation with me by clicking the button at the top of the page.

Step 2 - Checking it's a good fit

You've found your coach, they seem to be a good fit, and you've booked your initial consultation. You've taken action, which is a brilliant first step. But what now?

Honesty is absolutely key here... Being as honest and real as you can with your coach will give them the information they need to establish whether or not they can help you. The coaching community are pretty nice folk, so if they can't help you, they may know somebody who can. If you're just not getting the right feel from your coach, it's absolutely fine to say so. They will appreciate their honesty, and they'll be able to tell you if there's something you've missed.

As a Mindspan™️ Consultant, I have a network of licensed Mindspan coaches who I can easily refer to clients who I can't help. I invest time into getting to know other coaches, so that I'm able to refer people to them when it's appropriate.

Step 3 - The first session

This is, arguably, the most important session. It's your opportunity to give it all to your coach - the good, the bad, and the ugly. They'll likely ask lots of questions to enable them to understand your particular set of circumstances, and they'll likely share some key information with you that's relevant. Expect to take home some tasks to complete. It's vital that you understand that the transformations rarely happen in the coaching session itself - it's when you apply the tasks in your everyday life that you'll start to see things shifting.

Step 4 - Subsequent sessions

Your coach will provide you with homework / assignments to complete between sessions, and they may check in with you in between sessions to make sure you're doing ok. Subsequent sessions will vary greatly, depending on the areas of focus for you individually. Your coach will likely share some information or knowledge with you in each session that's relevant to the situation and the tasks you're being asked to take home.

Step 5 - The last session

You and your coach will be constantly liaising about when you're likely to finish your sessions, and hopefully by that point you'll have had the transformation you were hoping for. It's important to remember that we're all constantly evolving, so you may decide that you've had enough for now, or you may just decrease the regularity of your sessions. The beauty is that it's completely flexible to suit you!
